Not the French Foreign Legion…
We're joining the service. The Foreign Service. Not quite Bond. Not quite "The Gay Diplomat." Probably more like "The Last Remake of Beau Geste." Come along for the ride. (Movie References deliberate and ubiquitous.)

NPR Story
Back in August, NPR did a two-part story on Life in the Foreign Service. For those of you who didn't hear it, I'm posting the link. I don't recall it being terribly informative, but it might be of some interest.
I remember this story and actually thought of it and the travails of its subjects, when you told me about your upcoming adventure. I was going to mention it and then thought better of it. So much for that idea.
I talked to a lot of people about this over the weekend, and some of them had interesting reactions. Especially when I told them where I was hoping to go.
None of them shivered when I told them I wanted to be outside the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. Which is the usual response I get. So that was good.
But then I mentioned Lebanon and Syria. (Both areas have some amazing historical sites nearby which it would be so fantastic to be able to see in person.) And, yeah, they kinda looked at me like I'm crazy. "you mean...where they ambushed the embassy last week????"
Yeah, where they ambushed the embassy. And didn't get past the Syrian soldiers. As opposed to another "dream" spot of Boston, MA. (I hear they have a mind-boggling collection of used bookstores.) Where I could have a slab fall on me.
Oh, I meant to finish off that by saying, but Hey! If you find something cool, that you think to bring to my attention, THIS IS THE PLACE! Cause I'm only me, and I get busy, and I miss things...so please pass them along!
Robin, Have not heard from you since the middle of dec. Saw Fred before he left the springs. its almost as if something was conspiring to keep you from moving or some such. I hope this finds you happy healthy and loved.

It's all in your perspective.
